Illustration: Masumura Hiroshi
Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1952. He became obsessed with the Beatles from the age of 12, and was heavily influenced by Miyazawa Kenji at the age of 20.
In 1973, he won the Tezuka Award for his entry in Shonen Jump, "The Night Smoothed by the Mist."
After that, he worked for the editorial department of the manga magazine Garo, and from 1977 he began serializing the author's masterpiece, "Atagooru Monogatari," in Manga Shonen magazine.
He won the 1997 Japan Manga Artists Association Award for his "Atagoor Tamatebako" series.
He began working on making Miyazawa Kenji's manga adaptation from 1983, and in 2001 he won the Miyazawa Kenji Society of Ehatob Prize for his achievements.
In 1985, the film "Night on the Galaxy Railroad" was released, featuring illustrations by Masumura Hiroshi, director Sugii Gizabro, and music by Hosono Haruomi, which became a hot topic.
In 2012, he also worked as the character design for the film "The Biography of Guscovedori."
