Picture: Yayuki Sasame
Born in Tokyo in 1943. He moved to Paris in 1970 and to New York the following year. In 1972, he returned to Paris and attended the Cherbourg School of Fine Arts, where he continued to paint for a year. Returned to Japan in 1973. In 1985, he won the Silver Prize at the Domelhof International Print Competition in Belgium. In 1988, he submitted an invited work to the Grenchen International Print Exhibition in Switzerland.
Won the Shogakukan Art Award for ``Gadolf's Lily'' (written by Kenji Miyazawa, published by Kaiseisha), which was published in the magazine ``Monthly MOE.'' He received the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award Sashie Prize for other works such as ``Masuki Kuaraba'' (by Kuhachiro Kogarashi, written by Kodansha). Received the Japan Picture Book Award for the picture book ``The Cat Will Come Tomorrow'' (written by Chihiro Ishizu, published by Kodansha).
His works include ``Italian Road'' (Kodansha), a collection of sketches made during his stay in Italy, and collections of essays such as ``Truely Usorashibashi'' (Chikuma Shobo) and ``One-Fourteenth Moon'' (Gengi Shobo). He has also published prints under his real name Masayuki Hosoya.
