Illustration: Hiroshi Abe
Born in Hokkaido in 1948. While working as a zookeeper at Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa City, where he was in charge of various animals for 25 years, he started writing picture books after writing for Town magazine. In 1996, he retired from Asahiyama Zoo and devoted himself to creative activities.
``Storm Night'' (Yuichi Kimura/Kodansha) won the Kodansha Publishing Culture Prize Picture Book Award and the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award JR Award; ``Gorilla Nikki'' (Shogakukan) won the Shogakukan Children's Publishing Culture Award; He has received many awards, including the Akai Tori Sashie Award for the series ``Purupuru the Rineme'' (written by Yukiko Ninomiya, published by Bunkeido) and the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award and Nippon Broadcasting Award for ``Dobutsu Yubin'' (Kodansha). Major picture book works include ``The Bear and the Boy'' (Bronze Shinsha), ``Ezo Wolf Story'' (Kodansha), ``Lion's Long Day'' (Kosei Publishing), and ``The Three Otters'' series (Komine Publishing). His art collection includes ``Konchiki Arctic Expedition: 3,000 km in Search of Polar Bears'' (Kaiseisha), and his essays include ``Hiroshi Abe Dictionary of Animal Friendship'' (Crayon House).
